How to edit AI text without turning conditions into promises

Before shortening an AI-assisted draft, mark who acts, what action is described and which conditions apply. Treat those details as the boundaries of the edit, then work on the wording inside them.

Keep a meaning record beside the draft

Purdue OWL recommends comparing a paraphrase with its original to preserve essential information; this is editing guidance, not a guarantee of accuracy, and paraphrased source material still needs attribution Purdue OWL.

Copy the passage into a working document and keep the original visible beside the revision. Underline names, negation, qualifications and any words that distinguish a possibility from a commitment; leave a note beside anything you cannot resolve from the source.

Use the record to ask a narrow question: does the rewrite make the same commitment to the same reader under the same conditions? For a passage based on another author's work, keep the source citation attached during editing instead of reconstructing it from memory afterward.

Try the edit on a fictional service message

For this invented exercise, start with: “If the customer supplies the missing file, the support team will review the request before confirming whether a replacement can be sent.”

Try this revision: “The support team will review the request if the customer sends the missing file, then confirm whether a replacement can be sent.”

Compare it with this deliberately faulty version: “Send the missing file and the support team will send a replacement.”

In the faulty version, underline “will send” and ask where the original promised that outcome. Reject that edit unless the author explicitly intends to change the commitment, and record that as a content decision rather than a style adjustment.

For your own passage, try removing an introductory phrase or replacing a roundabout expression with a direct verb. Keep the original whenever the shorter option removes a condition, changes the responsible person or turns a tentative statement into a guarantee.

Accept changes individually

Read the edited passage aloud, then compare it with the meaning record without looking at any style score. Check the surrounding paragraph for a pronoun with an unclear referent or a qualification that belonged to more than one sentence.

Accept only the changes you can explain, leave unresolved questions for the author, and save the checked version separately from the original.
